What to expect in therapy
Therapy can vary depending on the type of therapy, the therapist, and your goals. However, there are some common elements that you can expect in therapy, such as:
Before you start therapy, you may have an initial assessment session, where you and your therapist will discuss your reasons for seeking help, your expectations, and your goals. This session can help you and your therapist decide if you are a good match and if therapy is suitable for you.
During therapy, you will usually have regular sessions with your therapist, either face-to-face, online, or over the phone. The sessions can last from 50 minutes to an hour, and the frequency and duration of therapy can vary depending on your needs and preferences. You and your therapist will agree on a contract that outlines the terms and conditions of your therapy, such as the fees, the cancellation policy, and the confidentiality agreement.
In each session, you will have the opportunity to talk about your feelings, thoughts, and experiences, and your therapist will listen to you attentively and empathically. Your therapist will not tell you what to do or give you advice, but they will ask you questions, reflect back what you say, and challenge you gently to help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your situation. Your therapist may also use different techniques or exercises, such as role-playing, journaling, or relaxation, to help you explore your issues and find solutions.
After therapy, you may have a final session, where you and your therapist will review your progress, celebrate your achievements, and plan for the future. You may also discuss how to end your therapy relationship and how to maintain your well-being after therapy.
